The New Moulin Rouge Dance School (Competition) by : Adi Mauludi and Dadit Pradono

MAIN CONCEPT OF THE BUILDING

The Moulin Rouge, known throughout the world for its can-can dancers, has always provided a magnificent show for its audience. The analogy of the red windmill towards can-can dancers (the attraction can-can dancers), become the main concept of this design proposal.

In the real condition, the red windmill looks being cut by the building below it, so that is why we cannot see it completely. In this design, Moulin Rouge’s icon still remains, especially the form and the position. The complete form of this windmill can be seen from the addition ‘foot’ of the windmill until the ground. The red windmill had been an analogy towards can-can dancers where it has ‘head’, ‘body’, and ‘foot’ elements and also the new red windmill. The power of the monumental character elements and the history of the Moulin Rouge itself will have been remained with this concept.

TWO FACADES

The strong point of this design is all anybody can see two facades and two atmospheres from this building. If the people want to see the new facade and atmosphere of the new Moulin Rouge, they can enjoy it in the daytime. On the other hand, if they want to feel the atmosphere of the old Moulin Rouge, they can feel it at night.

COVERING RED WINDMILL AND PART OF RED WINDMILL

The height of the building is 25 linear meters above the level of the street and consists of 6 levels where all of the visitor can feel and see ‘can can dancers’ to the red windmill from each level and from the different angle. On the ground floor, the audience can see the first part of the Moulin Rouge. They will see ‘the foot’ of the Moulin Rouge. When the audience go to the second floor, they will feel and see ’the thigh’. The Moulin Rouge’s ‘hips’ and ‘stomach’ will be felt by the audience when they go to the third level. On the fourth level, ‘the breast’ of the Moulin Rouge will be the focus of the audience. And then, the last part of this serial vision is ‘the head’ of the Moulin Rouge could be seen by the audience when they are there. The arrangement of floors like this make all of the audience not just only can see the complete part of the red windmill, but they can feel and see it closely.

Plans and Sections

PLAN OF THE NEW DANCE SCHOOL BUILDING

The building consists of 6 levels. Ground floor as a public area will be used to place an exterior space, an entrance hall, an auditorium 1, an administration, a public toilet and a souvenir store. The auditoriums are arranged on ground floor and the second floor with the consideration, it will be easy to be accessed by the audience. The administration is arranged on the ground floor, and it also takes some space on the second floor, so it can give make the audience get the information about the new dance school of Moulin Rouge more easily.

This building is completed by with vertical circulation system in the form of two lifts and an emergency stair which take place in the middle of the building. On the back of building, there is a stair from the ground floor until the sixth floor. That stairs only can be used as a vertical circulation system by the students, the teachers, and all of the staff of the new dance school of Moulin Rouge, because the stairs connect backstage 1, backstage 2, dressing room, and training room level 4 until level 6.

Each of the training rooms on the level 4, 5, and 6 has a mezzanine floor at one side of the room. The function of the mezzanine floor is as a place for students to exercise before they dance (like warming up and stretching). It also functions as a viewing deck for the teachers to see all of their students from above. For the people who want to see the training activity in the training room, they can observe through the glass in the visitor center.
